Help:Moving a page

From Interesting Times

<languages/> Template:PD Help Page <translate> Moving (renaming) a page means giving it another name.</translate> <translate> This is done by using the "<tvar name="1">move</tvar>" action of tab "<tvar name="3">More</tvar>" at the top.</translate> <translate> The tab is not visible if you are not logged in.</translate> <translate> Then simply enter the new name and click "<tvar name="1">Move page</tvar>".</translate> <translate> Normally you would want to leave the "<tvar name="1">Move associated talk page</tvar>" option ticked.</translate>

<translate> If you move page "A" to a new title "B", this operation will do the following:

 • Renames the title of page "A" as "B"</translate>

<translate>

 • Renames all the editing history of page "A" as of page "B" as well</translate>

<translate>

 • Creates a new page "A", whose content is a redirect to page "B"

</translate>

<translate> The second point is important.</translate> <translate> By using the "<tvar name="1">Move</tvar>" feature, you also move the editing history, which is desirable in most situations.</translate> <translate> The editing history allows people to see how the contents of the page were built up, and who contributed what.</translate> <translate> If you move contents around by copying and pasting (not using the move feature), you do not achieve this (see also <tvar name="1">Help:Tracking changes </tvar>).</translate>

<translate> When the move operation leaves behind a redirect (see <tvar name="1">Help:Redirects </tvar>), it should not result in any broken links except the possibility of double redirects – that is, pages redirecting to "A" which becomes a redirect itself.</translate> <translate> You might want to hunt down pages or other redirects which link in to the redirect, and change their text to link directly to the new title.</translate> <translate> The "<tvar name="1">What links here</tvar>" feature, which can be used through the link in the <tvar name="2">Tools</tvar> (at bottom of the sidebar) is useful when doing this.</translate>

<translate>

Undo a move

</translate> <translate> As with almost all wiki editing, a move operation can be reversed (by any user).</translate> <translate> To reverse a move operation, simply move the page back, e.g. move page "B" back to "A".</translate>

<translate> The page title "B" will still be left behind, as a redirect from "B" to "A".</translate> <translate> Any user can remove the redirect and propose that the page be deleted. However the final deletion will require sysop privileges (see <tvar name="delete">Help:Deletion and undeletion </tvar>).</translate>

<translate>

Moving a page without creating a redirect

</translate>

right|350px|thumb|<translate> Relevant option highlighted</translate>

<translate> Users with the <tvar name="1">suppressredirect</tvar> user right can optionally move a page without creating a redirect. This is particularly useful when undoing a move.

When the right is enabled, one additional check box will appear when one needs to move a page (see picture at right).

URL parameters

These query strings can be added to the URL of <tvar name=1>Special:MovePage</tvar> in order to fill out fields and check boxes in advance. </translate>

<translate> Parameter</translate> <translate> Meaning</translate>
wpOldTitleNs=n <translate> Namespace number of existing page</translate>
wpOldTitle= <translate> Title of existing page</translate>
wpNewTitleNs=n <translate> Target namespace number</translate>
wpNewTitle= <translate> Target page title</translate>
wpMovetalk=1 <translate> Move talk page, if one exists.</translate>
wpReason= <translate> Text for reason field</translate>
wpWatch=1 <translate> Watch source and target pages</translate>

<translate>

Mass renaming / moving

</translate> <translate> MediaWiki does not offer a special page with which to perform a batch operation for page moves.</translate> <translate> There may be alternatives, depending on your situation:</translate>

<translate>

Moving subpages

Users with the <tvar name="1">move-subpages</tvar> user right can optionally move subpages of a page (up to 100), preserving its "tree" structure. If you specify the root page you want to move in the title (by visiting <tvar name="4">Special:MovePage</tvar>/Some page), the special page displays the subpages of that root page.
